Statewide Household Travel Survey

light railThe California Department of Transportation Travel Analysis Branch conducts a statewide household travel survey. The branch maintains multimodal travel related information for model estimation, transportation planning, project development, air quality analysis, and a variety of other Caltrans programs. The 2000-2001 California Statewide Travel Survey covered over 17,000 households and 300 household GPS travel surveys.

Who Will Use the Statewide Household Travel Survey?

Our customers include the California Department of Transportation Districts and Headquarter divisions such as, Division of Transportation Planning (DOTP), Division of TSI (TSI), Department of Mass Transit (DMT), and the Division of Aeronautics. Other customers include private consultants, the Air Resources Board (ARB), California Highway Patrol (CHP), Regional Transportation Planning Associations (RTPAs), Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), private consultants, Bureau of Transportation and Housing (BT&H), Transportation Research Board (TRB), State Legislators, other State DOT's, universities, and the media.

Product Expectations

Our customers have come to expect our branch to:

  • Deliver validated travel activities for travel behavior analysis, including trip rate, trip lengths, trip purposes, socioeconomic factors, trip characteristics, and trip activities; and
  • Provide sufficient required data for model development.

Performance Objectives

We oversee our data quality by:

  • Validating survey results using statistical methods; and
  • Comparing survey results to other surveys, traffic counts, and CENSUS data.
