What is the GPS-ATD?

The GPS-Automated Travel Diary (GPS-ATD) will improve the performance of the household travel survey. This project will provide transportation planners and modelers with more complete and accurate traveler behavior and mode choice information. The GPS-ATD is being developed in a partnership with AHMCT at UC Davis.

Who Uses the GPS-Automated Travel Diary?

Transportation Planners, Modelers, TSI staff, Caltrans Districts, DOTP, Division of Mass Transportation, Division of Aeronautics, Division of Rail, BT&H, ARB, CHP, Legislators, MPOs, regional and local agencies.

Customer Expectations

Our customers expect our branch to:

  • Produce accurate travel behavior information with the GPS-Automated Travel Diary to be used in Travel Demand Models,
  • Use statistical survey methods for computing inter-regional and regional trips with the GPS-Automated Travel Diary,
  • Follow procedures and guidelines while using the GPS-ATD devices to collect traveler information, and
  • Provide GPS travel survey information that is applicable to Caltrans Divisions of Planning, Mass Transportation, Rail, and Aeronautics.

Performance Objectives

We oversee the quality of our data by:

  • Conducting field tests of equipment to ensure reliability.
  • Checking for quality control throughout the project.
  • Discussing our results with users to determine their level of satisfaction.
