What is the MVSTAFF?
This annual report updates, estimates, and forecasts the annual statewide and countywide number of vehicles, vehicle miles of travel (VMT), vehicle fuel consumption (VFC), and vehicle fuel economy (VFE).
Who Uses the MVSTAFF?
California Department of Transportation Districts, Department of Transportation Planning (DOTP), Division of TSI (TSI), Department of Mass Transit (DMT), Air Resources Board (ARB), California Highway Patrol (CHP), Regional Transportation Planning Associations (RTPAs), Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), private consultants, Bureau of Transportation and Housing (BT&H), State Legislators, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Federal Highway Association (FHWA), to name a few.
Product Expectations
Our customers have come to expect:
- Reasonable, consistent estimates and forecasts of statewide registered vehicles, VMT, VFC, and VFE.
- VMT by county and by road system (state highway and non-state highway).
- VFC by county and by fuel type (gasoline or diesel).
- Statewide truck VMT by vehicle weight (GVW) classes.
Performance Measurement
We oversee the quality of the data by:
- Comparison of annual VMT model estimates with VMT estimates derived from fuel sales and from smog check data.
- Comparison of regional VMT estimates with regional transportation agency estimates.
- Relating VMT distribution by county with other key socio-economic variables by county such as population, vehicle registration, fuel sale, etc.
