Duplicate and stations outside of California were eliminated from the dataset, and a complete dataset was created. The personal geodatabase was opened in Microsoft Access 2000, and the temporary spreadsheet was imported into the database. (This step was used because ArcGIS does not read excel spreadsheets, and saving the table as a .dbf, the values after the decimal place for lat/long are dropped off.) The geodatabase table was opened in ArcMap, and the tool Make XY event layer was used, under data management tools/layers and table views in ArcToolBox. The Geographic North American NAD 1983 was used as the coordinate system. The resultant event theme was compared to the county boundaries to make sure they fell into the correct position. The event layer was then exported as a shapefile point feature class named 'wxstna'.The 'WXSTNA' dataset was developed from the National Weather Service (NWS) Western Region Headquarters.
