Initial boundaries were derived from USGS 1:250,000 scale hydrological unit boundaries. Boundaries were modified based on migration blockages and known fish distribution. Drainage basin delineation from blockages was based on 1:100,000 stream hydrography and/or available digital topography (1:250,000). ESU polygons depict major basins within the current known range of each ESU. Species do not necessarily inhabit all drainages or river reaches depicted. More detailed information on species distribution within each ESU is available from NMFS and other Federal, state, and tribal resources. Updated 6/12/06 to reflect recent changes in ESA listing status. DPS boundary updates still under development. The Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) of the NOAA Fisheries Service, also called National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), is a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Department of Commerce. The NWFSC studies living marine resources (e.g., salmon, groundfish, and killer whales) and their habitats in the Northeast Pacific Ocean-primarily off the coasts of Washington and Oregon and in freshwater rivers and streams in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. The Center seeks to better understand living marine resources and their ecosystems to assist resource managers in making sound decisions that build sustainable fisheries, recover endangered and threatened species, and sustain healthy coasts.
