The LAKE500 feature class represents the major lakes and reservoir boundaries in California. The linework for this polygon feature class was derived from a hydrography feature class in the Teale GIS Library.
LAKE500 was created for possible use as a lake background layer on any statewide feature class.

The feature class was created from Teale Data Center GIS Lab's HYD500 feature class, an older basic version of their hydrology feature class that is no longer being actively supported by Teale. Therefore some of the item names in the data attributes may be modified or be obsolete when compared to the more recent hydrology feature class. The information contained in this feature class is as accurate as the data provided by Teale. The lake arcs in this feature class have been selected so as to match as closely as possible the lake linework in the Caltrans State Highway Map. Lake Tahoe was originally an arc segment due to lack of data from the Teale feature class and has since been enclosed. A few of the lakes are outside the California state boundary. Since LAKE500 was created for possible use as a background for statewide feature class, it may not address the needs of users interested in small areas due to simplification
