We are the "Pathway to Information" so it is natural that many people come to us to help them find data, whether it is Caltrans' data or data from external sources. We have compiled the list below to help with questions our customers ask us frequently. This is not a comprehensive list. We will be updating it constantly.

We need to find the vehicle miles traveled on an hourly basis for some of our city's streets and roads. Local agencies such as Cities and Counties would be the best source for this data. The data we track in Sacramento is more of an overview of the State Highway system.
We need Maps! We need to find roads and what distirict and region they are located in. We need to find maps with functional classificationsand other assorted maps. Office of Geospatial INformation is a great resource for maps in TSI.

Freeway Research Data
- Where can I find more freeway data? Caltrans Performance Measurement System (PeMS) The traffic data displayed on the map is collected in real-time from over 25,000 individual detectors. These sensors span the freeway system across all major metropolitan areas of the State of California.
Traffic Volumes
- Where can I find a monthly estimate of Vehicle Miles Traveled? The Traffic Data Branch produces a monthly Vehicle Miles of Travel (VMT) report (also called the "Trend" report). This report estimates the number of vehicle miles that motorists traveled on California State Highways. On this same site you will find monthly trends going back to 1972.

Can companies purchase a web feed of traffic information from Caltrans?Our website, Caltrans Commercial Wholesale Web Portal, allows access to our raw data that is used by many Information Service Providers. This portal provides a single location to obtain the following information: Vehicle Speed and Volume Traffic Data Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Video Images. Changeable Message Sign (CMS) Traffic Messages posted on electronic variable message signs Lane Closure System (LCS) Data Roadside Weather Information Systems (RWIS) Weather and Fog Information.
