Getting to Eureka
NEW STAA DESIGNATION ON ROUTE 101: Eureka may now be accessed by STAA vehicles travelling SOUTHBOUND from the Oregon border. STAA vehicles may continue on 101 south of Crescent City to the vicinity of Benbow Dr. in southern Humboldt County. STAA vehicles MAY NOT use Route 199 from the Oregon border to 101. For more information, see the map of Caltrans District 1, which includes Eureka: District 1 Map.
CALIFORNIA LEGAL VEHICLES REQUIRED IN EUREKA AREA FROM 2 DIRECTIONS: Both single-trailer and double-trailer vehicles must still be "California Legal" to access the Eureka area from NORTHBOUND 101, and from westbound 299.
"California Legal" vehicles with single trailers are defined as:
- maximum 65 feet overall combination length, and
- maximum 40 feet kingpin-to-rear-axle (KPRA) length
For a graphic illustration of the length dimensions of California Legal (black truck) and STAA (green truck) vehicles with both single trailers and doubles, see this web page:
65-Foot Overall Length Limit: If your STAA vehicle has a 40-foot KPRA or less, you must modify your overall length to 65 feet or less. This can be accomplished by switching to a shorter tractor.
40-Foot KPRA Limit: If your STAA vehicle has a 48-foot trailer and a KPRA length over 40 feet, you will need to modify the combination to "California Legal" by reducing the overall length to 65 feet, AND by sliding the axle so that the KPRA length is no more than 40 feet.
COMPANIES FOR HIRE
To assist truckers in reaching Eureka legally from the direction of northbound 101 or westbound 299, the following companies are listed as available for hire. These companies may offer a number of options, including the use of a hired tractor to attain a "California Legal" length of 65 feet, and/or transferring the load to a California Legal vehicle. These private companies are listed here for convenience; they have not been confirmed or approved by the State of California. Caltrans cannot guarantee or be held responsible for any company or service on this list.
