Storm Water and Water Pollution Control

Caltrans has a comprehensive storm water program for preventing water pollution on properties it manages. Resources have been developed to assist Caltrans staff, lessees and contractors to achieve this goal.

Contractors who perform demolition work are referred to the Construction Storm Water website at http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/construc/stormwater/stormwater1.htm.

The Right-of-Way Property Management and Airspace Storm Water Guidance Manual provides guidance on selecting and implementing best management practices (BMPs) for lease activities or maintenance work that may be conducted on Caltrans properties.

The Storm Water Guidance Manual also provides information on lease activities that may require coverage under Water Quality Order 97-03-DWQ, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), General Permit No. CAS00001 (Industrial General Permit). Additional information on the Industrial General Permit may be found at the State Water Resources Control Board website: http://www.swrcb.ca.gov/stormwtr/.
