Welcome to California Department of Transportation

Introduction

Welcome to the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative Infrastructure Consortium (IC) Program Partnership site. California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is the lead state in what is becoming an exciting program for safety-related research and deployment activities for Infrastructure Consortium and Intelligent Decision Support (IDS) issues.

Work facilitated under this program will support the goals and objectives of the Intelligent Vehicles Initiative Request for Information. Studies will be funded on an ongoing basis following review proposals and discussion of user needs, benefits, and technical merits thereof.

Two Objectives

1.  Specialty Vehicles

In November 1998 a Work Plan was proposed to form the basis of a public-sector Partnership for managing the IVI Specialty Vehicles Platform Research Program. This program, a Regional Pool and Federal IVI Funded program led by California Department of Transportation, was a collaborative effort between multiple state departments of transportation with interest in advancement of specialty vehicles.

To date, the partnership funded two projects which yielded findings on utilizing technologies to assist snow removal operations. Specifically, the projects looked at different methods of sensing the roadway ("Where am I in the lane? Where am I on the map?"), sensing obstacles ("Is there anything in my path?"), and notifying the driver of these things. These two projects ended in June 2001.

No other projects for Specialty Vehicle IVI research are scheduled to be conducted at this time.

2.  Infrastructure Consortium

In August 1999, the Partnership agreed to support FHWA in a new focus: Infrastructure Consortium - Intersection Decision Support. Specifically, we expect to help the IVI Program extend the possibilities of Intersection Collision Avoidance implementations by representing the infrastructure side of vehicle-infrastructure interactions.

Structure / Participants

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is managing the IC-IDS Program. A Technical Advisory Committee has a representative from each contributing agency to provide technical analysis of study proposals and recommendations for technical content of studies.

The specifics of selecting investigations and studies will be a periodic, collaborative process. The involvement of both public and private stakeholders allows for the consideration of many issues coming from differing perspectives. The pooled funding and cost sharing relationship between the partners encourages mutual consideration of special needs in developing solutions.
