AVALANCHE PRONE SECTION OF STATE ROUTE 89 OVER EMERALD BAY REOPENED TO MOTORISTS

Highway Has Been Closed Several Times During This El Niño Winter

EMERALD BAY – In this Caltrans News Flash, you’ll get an up-close look at the South Lake Tahoe area maintenance crew in action as they clear a large amount of snow, 14 feet high in some areas, to reopen State Route 89 over Emerald Bay to motorists.

This four-mile stretch of the scenic highway has as many as 15 active slide zones and has been closed several times during this El Niño winter when it became unsafe for the traveling public. In this News Flash, the highway had been closed for 14 days before it could be reopened. Caltrans understands that gating off the highway is an inconvenience to commuters who travel to and from the West Shore and South Shore of Lake Tahoe, but safety is the department’s top priority, not only for the public but also for the workers who maintain this roadway.
