SAN LUIS OBISPO – Caltrans has awarded nearly $250 million to improve public transit and air quality across California. One-hundred twenty-seven projects will upgrade transit service, purchase eco-friendly buses, modernize transit stations, and create jobs throughout the state.

“These projects give Californians a viable alternative to using their cars,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. "Public transit reduces traffic congestion and protects the environment by lowering greenhouse gas emissions.”

The funding comes from Proposition 1B, the 2006 voter-approved transportation bond, which is providing $3.6 billion over a 10-year period to improve public transit in California. To date, Proposition 1B has provided more than $2 billion in funding to nearly 900 transit projects statewide, with 340 completed.

Some of the notable projects awarded Proposition 1B funding include:

  • San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority: $998,296 for the purchase of five to ten acres for the construction of a facility to house maintenance, scheduling, dispatch and administrative functions.
  • City of Solvang: $35,000 for the installation of security lighting where vehicles are housed.
  • San Benito County Council of Governments: $87,000 to replace a fifteen year old fueling facility which will include new fueling pumps, updated security features and tracking software.
  • City of Morro Bay: $13,000 for the purchase of a replacement vehicle including the installation of a bicycle rack and new communications equipment.
