New Highway Widening Project
Will Deliver More Traffic Congestion Relief to State Route 99

FRESNO - Caltrans began work today on a $68 million highway widening project that will reduce congestion and improve the movement of agricultural goods on State Route 99 in Fresno and Madera counties.

“This is good for Fresno and Madera residents and will serve farmers for decades,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. Caltrans will widen a three-mile section of SR-99 from four lanes to six lanes from just south of Grantland Avenue in Fresno County to just north of Avenue 7 in Madera County. On average, more than 60,000 vehicles daily use this section of highway.

The existing San Joaquin River Bridges will also be replaced and shifted to the west.
The project is scheduled to be completed by summer 2016.

The project is fully funded by Proposition 1B, a transportation bond approved by voters in 2006. In total, approximately $14.7 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been distributed statewide.
