Caltrans completes new Cushenberry Bridge project

San Bernadino, CA –  Caltrans has finished major construction on a $3 million bridge project on State Route 18 in San Bernardino County. The project was financed entirely by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). “My Administration is working constantly to ensure recovery dollars are delivered into California quickly and responsibly to stimulate the economy and in this case, invest in the future of our transportation infrastructure right here in San Bernardino,” said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The project constructed a new 40-foot-wide bridge over Cushenberry Creek on SR-18 near the existing bridge, which was constructed during the Eisenhower era. The new bridge was built according to current seismic standards, making it more likely to withstand an earthquake. The highway is a popular route for residents of the high desert communities of Victorville, Hesperia, and Barstow travelling to and from the Big Bear mountain resort. Caltrans also constructed a new turning lane at the intersection of SR-18 and Camp Rock Road, giving motorists a safer and smoother transition from the highway to Camp Rock Road. “This project is a great example of how funding provided by the Recovery Act enabled us to build a new, seismically safe bridge that generations of motorists will use,” said Caltrans Director Cindy McKim. Under Governor Schwarzenegger’s leadership, California has obligated nearly $2.6 billion in Recovery Act funding to nearly 1,000 highway, local street, and job training transportation projects statewide.
