CALTRANS ANNOUNCES HIGH SCHOOL POETRY CONTEST
The “Slow for the Cone Zone” Poetry Jam Gives Tips for Safe Driving and Cash Prizes
SACRAMENTO CA The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the launch of an on-line high school poetry contest. To compete, students must log-on to www.slowfortheconezone.com. They have until December 8, 2006 to write a poem on one of the two topics provided. The poetry contest aims to inform teens about safe driving in highway work zones while giving them an opportunity to win cash prizes.
“Rhyme and reason – and win cash,” says Caltrans Director Will Kempton. “Caltrans is reaching out to teens because studies show that new drivers are at the highest risk of being involved in fatal collisions. Thanks to our corporate sponsors, we’re able to offer these incentives while engaging the students to be aware of the dangers of driving on a work zone.”
Students should submit their entry by email at email@example.com or by mail to “Slow for the Cone Zone” Poetry Jam, 6313 Elvas Ave, Sacramento, CA 95819. Cash prizes for the winning entries include $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Prizes will be awarded by December 22, 2006
