CALTRANS DIRECTOR KEMPTON SAYS PROP 42 PROTECTION GUARANTEES $7 BILLION FOR LOCAL ROADS, TRANSIT

Sacramento – In testimony this week before the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Director Will Kempton said Governor Schwarzenegger’s Strategic Growth Plan (SGP) would permanently protect Prop 42, generating billions of dollars for local transportation projects.

“Permanent protection of Prop 42 would provide more than $7 billion over the next decade to cities and counties to improve local streets and public transit,” Kempton said.

Director Kempton explained to legislators that the governor’s $107 billion Strategic Growth Plan (SGP) for transportation focuses on reducing traffic congestion.

“The goal during the next decade is to reduce congestion below today’s levels while accommodating growth in the population and the economy,” Kempton said.

The SGP addresses the needs of the entire transportation system by providing funding for highways, transit, intercity rail, safety, and goods movement to keep California’s economy strong.

The Administration is also proposing legislation to provide Caltrans authority to deliver projects more quickly and efficiently through the use of design-build contracting and design-sequencing, as well as legislation to fund and deliver projects through a variety of public-private partnerships.
