Mike Miles

Maintenance and Operations

Mike MilesAppointed by California Department of Transportation Director, Will Kempton, in 2005, Michael Miles is the Deputy Director for Maintenance and Operations. Mr. Miles is responsible for the maintenance and traffic operations functions for more than 50,000 lane miles of State highways stretching from Mexico to Oregon, and from the Pacific Ocean to Nevada and Arizona. In this capacity he oversees more than 8,000 employees and an annual budget exceeding 1.6 billion dollars. In addition, he manages the equipment assets utilized throughout California, and the Research and Innovation team that partners with major universities and other states to maintain Caltrans’ position as a world leader in transportation.

Mr. Miles has been a member of the Caltrans organization since 1989 and has served on its executive management team as Director of Maintenance in both District 7 – Los Angeles, and District 8 – San Bernardino. His extensive and innovative work with local, regional, and state-level organizations drew high praise while serving in these heavily urbanized environments. Prior to joining Caltrans, Mike worked in private industry as both a field and project engineer.

Miles has “… had a life-long interest in public service and especially in working to make our highway system more efficient, while increasing the opportunities for partnering with private business and other governmental organizations.”

During his career, Mr. Miles has spearheaded worker safety initiatives and led the way to improved relations with other government organizations and collective bargaining representatives.

Miles earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and has participated in Executive Management Programs with the Universities of California at both Riverside and Los Angeles, and with California State University, Sacramento.
