VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Welcome to Caltrans' Volunteer Program
The Caltrans Volunteer Program offers (non-paid) training opportunities that will assist people in fulfilling their career development goals. Participants in the Program can work a variable schedule to accommodate their needs as well as the needs of Caltrans. A maximum or minimum number of hours is not a requirement of this program. Some volunteers choose to work in fields they are interested in, have current or prior schooling in, or work in areas they know little about and gaining exposure to a different career environment.
A volunteer position is a way to gain on-the-job training while performing a meaningful service for Caltrans. It is an excellent way to access various fields, become familiar with work environments, acquiring work related references and increase one's marketability for future employment. The Volunteer Program is an answer to the age old problem.. "You can't get a job if you don't have experience and you can't obtain the experience if you don't have a job.....". In addition, the Volunteer Program is an excellent avenue for transitional workers, early retirees, college students, and others who are returning to work.
With the cooperation and involvement of schools, community agencies, and the private sector, the Volunteer Program provides a positive service to members of the community and Caltrans.
If you are interested in volunteering, submit an up-to-date resume and a cover letter that clearly states that you would like to volunteer, what type of work experience you would like to gain, and where you are willing to work within California. Email your resume and cover letter to Denise E. Thomas at the e-mail address listed below.
Your resume and cover letter will then be submitted to the appropriate hiring authorities in the location(s) where you indicated you are willing to work. Those supervisors who can provide you the relevant work experience that you are seeking will then contact you.
