The West Approach connects the roadway located on ground level with the High Rise over the water. It is approximately 220 feet long, and is located entirely above dry land. The seismic retrofit of the West Approach will entail:
anchoring the structure with additional steel piles;
adding steel casings around the existing three sets of columns, making them stronger, and refocusing force vertically into the ground;
strengthening the connection between the piers and the bridge deck; and
installing displacement capacity joints at Pier 1 and adding a new pier, Pier 1A, to help resist seismic thrust from the High Rise.
