The State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will conduct an information session for construction contracts for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge East Span Seismic Safety Project. The bridge construction will be divided into multiple contracts. The unofficial estimate for the total project is more than $1.5 billion. Separate bid packages will be issued for each contract. It is anticipated that the first bid package will be awarded during the calendar year 2001.

This outreach briefing will focus on the Skyway contract, which is scheduled to be advertised in December 2000. The 2-kilometer Skyway superstructure consists of 13 spans of precast cantilever segmental concrete box girders and one span of orthotropic steel box girder. The footings consist of steel frames encased in reinforced concrete shell footings. The footings are supported by 2.5-meter diameter cast-in-steel shell piles. There will also be a brief update on the other contracts, which will include an update on the Steel Self-Anchored-Suspension bridge.

Contractor's information handouts will be provided at the information session. The purpose of the contractor outreach briefing is to provide information about the project area and the construction methodology. Contractors will have an opportunity to raise questions and make comments regarding the seismic safety construction project.

Information regarding proposed advertisement dates; construction packages; work items; schedule, and costs will be provided during the outreach briefing.
