Cross-Referencing of Sections and Details

Some consultant detailers have been making incorrect circular cross-references of details and sections on the plans. The following is the correct procedure.

When a section indicator is shown, for example on a plan view:

  • If the section is on the same sheet, there is no need for a note referring to the section.
  • When the section is located on another sheet, there shall be a note on the plan sheet referring to the sheet where the section is located.

Our general rule is to refer in one direction only, basically from the larger view to the more detailed view. Referring backwards should not be needed. A new edition of the Bridge Design Details Manual will be published in the near future and this information will be in Chapter 1 "General Detailing".
