The CHPC was formally established in 1984 as part of the Caltrans History Program. The History Program was created in 1984 by Policy and Procedure 84-5, Preservation of Departmentís Historical Materials; P&P 84-5 was updated and reissued in 1999 as Deputy Directive 58 (DD-58). The History Programís primary focus is to preserve and ensure access to selected historical materials such as records, photographs, maps, artifacts and equipment that document the history of the Department.
