Purpose – This is one of a series of documents intended to clarify minimum quality standards required by the Division of Equipment (DOE) for the Caltrans vehicle fleet.
Scope – This Caltrans DOE draft standard defines the vehicle fleet color, striping and decal identification.

2.1 COLORS, MATERIALS AND PART NUMBERS
2.1.1 Caltrans Standard Colors
Caltrans standard colors are: Orange, White and Black. Orange color is applied in the form of reflective striping. White and black colors are applied in the form of paint or coatings.
2.1.2 Striping Material & Color
The following reflective striping materials are used for fleet identification and safety considerations.

2.1.3 Logos & Decals
Decals shall be used for fleet identification. Decals and Division of Equipment part numbers are listed.
2.1.4 Application of Stripes and Decals
Decals and stripes should be placed on metal whenever possible. Decals and stripes shall be fitted in a professional manner with no wrinkles, creases or air bubbles.
2.2 Caltrans EQUIPMENT COLORS AND FLEET IDENTITY
2.2.1 FLEET IDENTIFICATION OBJECTIVE
Use standard colors, decals, shapes and stripes applied in a manner that is uniform enough to create an image recognized by all who see Caltrans equipment. Specific application details vary by class of equipment, model year and manufacturer. The Division of Equipment shall provide final approval for each model, manufacturer and type of equipment. 2.2.2 PASSENGER VEHICLES (Sedans, Station Wagons, SUV)
Passenger vehicles include sedans, station wagons, SUVs, and buses as listed in the Equipment Catalog. Passenger vehicles make up approximately 20% of the Caltrans equipment fleet.
2.2.2.1 Passenger Vehicle Color
Passenger vehicles shall be factory standard white.
2.2.2.2 Passenger Vehicle Striping
Passenger vehicles shall have a rear 4" orange horizontal stripe using material specified in 2.1.2.A.
2.2.2.3 Passenger Vehicle Door Decals
Front side doors shall have a 'CT' decal specified in 2.1.3.A and sized to fit the available space.
2.2.2.4 Passenger Vehicle 'Caltrans' Script Decals
A reflective orange ‘Caltrans’ script decal specified in 2.1.3.D shall be affixed to the rear of the vehicle near the left side. Exception: When available space is constrained due to vehicle design, loaction of brand logos, or other factors, the orange 'Caltrans' script may be replaced with the white 'Caltrans' script specified in 2.1.3.C and affixed to the orange stripe.
2.2.2.5 Passenger Vehicle 'Clean Air' Decals
'Clean Air' designated vehicles shall have the green decal specified in 2.1.3.E affixed to each side door below the 'CT' decal and to the rear of the vehicle below the 'Caltrans' script decal.

2.2.3 LIGHT DUTY UTILITY VEHICLES and PASSENGER VANS
Light duty vehicles (also known as "work vehicles") include all categories listed in the Equipment Catalog. Light Duty Utility Vehicles include 9’ Cargo Body, Cone Body, Mechanic Body, all Pickups up to 1-ton, Plumbing Truck, Sign Body, Step Van, Survey Body, Utility Body and Vans. Light duty utility vehicles make up approximately 40% of the Caltrans equipment fleet.
2.2.3.1 Light Duty Utility Vehicle Color
Light duty utility vehicles shall be factory standard white.
2.2.3.2 Light Duty Utility Vehicle Striping
A 5" or 6" horizontal orange stripe shall be applied to both sides and rear of all light duty utility vehicles using material specified in 2.1.2.A. Guidelines for decal and striping location are provided in drawings included in 2.2.3.4. Orange and White Diagonal Reflective Striping (DOE Part No. 053-2050-8) shall be applied to the rear of vehicles having a width greater than or equal to 80 inches.
2.2.3.3 Light Duty Utility Vehicle Door Decals
Front side doors shall have a ‘CT’ decal specified in 2.1.3.A and sized to fit the available space.
2.2.3.3 Light Duty Utility Vehicle 'Caltrans' Script Decals
A reflective orange ‘Caltrans’ script decal specified in 2.1.3.D shall be affixed to the rear of the vehicle near the left side. Exception: When available space is constrained due to vehicle design, loaction of brand logos, or other factors, the orange 'Caltrans' script may be replaced with the white 'Caltrans' script specified in 2.1.3.C and affixed to the rear orange stripe.

2.2.4 TRUCKS - LIGHT DUTY, MEDIUM DUTY and HEAVY DUTY
Trucks include Cargo Bodies larger than 9 ft., Dump Bodies, Utility Bodies with Personnel Hoist, and other truck vehicles as listed in the Caltrans Equipment Catalog. Trucks make up approximately 14% of the Caltrans equipment fleet.
2.2.4.1 Truck Color
Truck cab, hood, and fenders shall be factory standard fleet white color. Painted portions of truck chassis and underbody components shall be black in the manufacturer’s paint and finish. Other components may be finished according to the factory standard finish. Bodies and accessories above the frame and behind the cab shall be white.
2.2.4.2 Truck Striping
Truck striping shall include a 5" or 6" orange stripe of the material specified in 2.1.2.A. The body striping shall consist of a continous level horizontal stripe from front of cab to back of body. The level and width of the stripe shall be determined by the body rail as shown in their respective drawings, included in 2.2.4.4. Orange & White Diagonal Reflective Striping specified in 2.1.2.B shall be applied across the rear of the vehicle.
2.2.4.3 Truck Door Decals
Front side doors shall have a ‘CT’ decal specified in 2.1.3.A and sized to fit the available space. A black 'Caltrans' script decal specified in 2.1.3.B shall be affixed below the 'CT' decal (except for 'Clean Air' vehicles).
2.2.4.3 Truck 'Caltrans' Script Decals
A reflective orange ‘Caltrans’ script decal specified in 2.1.3.D shall be affixed to the rear of the vehicle near the left side.

2.2.5 CLEAN AIR VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION
Vehicles designated "Clean Air Vehicle" shall display three (3) reflective green "Clean Air Vehicle" labels specified in 2.1.3.E. These green decals shall be located below each "CT" door logo and on the rear of the vehicle.

2.2.6 OTHER MAINTENANCE CLASSES of Caltrans Equipment
2.2.6.1 Other Large Equipment -- General
Other large equipment shall be fleet white if this choice does not cost extra. Otherwise, standard factory color and finish are acceptable as long as they comply with the lead-free and compatibility requirements of the Caltrans Paint and Coatings standard.

2.2.6.2 Additional Maintenance Classes
Caltrans maintains a diverse equipment fleet. Specific descriptions of additional maintenance classes or other subgroups will be added on an as-needed basis. Subgroups may include sweepers, loaders, graders, mud trucks, etc.
2.3 Equipment Identification Numbers
Three (3) Department of Equipment seven-digit vehicle identification number labels shall be placed on each vehicle. Equipment ID labels shall be positioned at the highest right corner of the vehicle as viewed from the driver’s side, passenger side and rear of the vehicle.
