Drain Inlet Inserts

Two types of drain inlet inserts are being tested at three maintenance station locations in Los Angeles: a Fossil Filter® and a Stream Guard®. The inserts are configured to remove sediment, constituents (pollutants) adsorbed to sediment, and oil and grease. Drain inlets are placed in areas of the maintenance facilities that likely generate oil and grease and other constituents commonly found in maintenance runoff (e.g., where maintenance is performed, vehicles are parked, or heavy equipment is stored).

Stream Guard® inserts are sock-type inserts that allow collected water to filter through the geotextile fabric. Fossil Filter® inserts are trough-type inserts filled with granular amorphous alumina silicate media. The media removes pollutants by sorption. Maintenance includes removal of sediment and debris that could clog the filters. Both types of drain inlet inserts have a bypass function to prevent flooding from clogging or high flows.
