2012 Caltrans Highway Safety Poster Contest Rules

Calling all children and grandchildren of Caltrans employees!!

Contest Theme:

The poster contest theme is highway safety. Either the “Slow for the Cone Zone” or “Move Over” phrase must appear on the poster. Artwork will be judged for its creative expression of encouraging drivers to slow down and save lives in highway work zones.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be 17 years of age or younger and must be a child or grandchild of a Caltrans employee.

Age Categories:

  • 8 years old and under
  • 9 -11 years old
  • 12 – 14 years old
  • 15 to 17 years old

Entries Must Include the Following:

  • Completed entry form (poster template).
  • Biography (bio) of child along with parent or grandparent’s name, where he/she works and why the message is so important.
  • A good quality (developed) standard color photograph of the artist with his/her Caltrans relative (copies are not acceptable). If submitting digital photos, use highest resolution possible.

Winning entries, photos, and bios will be included in the Fallen Workers Memorial program and on the Caltrans Slow for the Cone Zone Web site along with the poster. The child will also receive a copy of his/her poster.

Specifications:

Artwork must be submitted on white paper using the pre-formatted 8.5”x14” template. Be sure to change printer setting to legal size paper. Bold and/or bright colors reproduce best. No computer-generated or altered artwork will be accepted. Poster can be portrait or landscape (vertical or horizontal).

To print the template, double click on the attachment (which should automatically launch Adobe Acrobat Reader and open the PDF file attachment). Make sure you are connected to a printer with legal sized printing capabilities, set to appropriate orientation, and select print.

DO NOT FOLD ARTWORK, except along the fold line on the template (it will fit in a 10 x 12 envelope).

Deadline:

Entries must be RECEIVED in the listed public affairs office no later than Monday, March 26, 2012. Entries received after that date will be disqualified for the poster contest, but will remain the property of the state and may be used in future projects.

Judging:

Posters will advance through two levels. Each district and headquarters public affairs office will choose four posters, one from each age category, as its finalists. A judging panel will select the four winning entries from among the finalists.

Artwork will be judged on:

  • Reflection of theme
  • Originality
  • Use of color

Reproduction Rights:

Once received, entries and photos become and remain the property of Caltrans and may be used for a variety of purposes with no compensation to the artist or his/her Caltrans relative.

Winning entries will be included in the 2012 Workers Memorial Program and featured on Caltrans’ Slow for the Cone Zone website.
