Pictures of the Old Town Sacramento Project

K Street Tunnel Sacramento, California

The K Street Mall is Sacramento's downtown main street shopping mall. At its western end, it ducks down under Interstate 5 into a pedestrian tunnel, where it connects to Old Sacramento, Sacramento's waterfront tourist area.

This $1.5 million project will be completed in two phases. The first phase covers the west end of the tunnel. A beautiful archway was installed at the west entrance to the tunnel, one block from the Sacramento River.

Under Interstate 5, the tunnel connects to parking lots with new staircases and plantings. Small "stages" beside the staircases provide performance space for music from the annual Sacramento Jazz Festival.

Attactive and vandal-proof lighting has been installed along the entire tunnel length along the edge between ceiling and wall.

The second phase of the project includes Italian tilework on the walls, replacing a decade-old mural.
