Program Overview

The Legislature appropriated $20 million from the Public Transportation Account in FY06-07 for grants to public agencies statewide, seeking to provide transit services specifically for farmworkers.  Enabling legislation for the state authorizes the Department to administer the AWTP which will expand the Agricultural Industries Transportation Services (AITS) Project model in agricultural areas statewide and sunset on June 30, 2010.

The AITS demonstration project (2001-2004) administered by the Division of Mass Transportation, has evolved into a compelling model for the provision of safe, efficient, reliable and affordable transportation services for farmworkers.  Operated by Ron Hughes, Transit Manager for Kings County Area Public Transportation Agency, the success of the $6 million AITS project in Fresno, Kings, and Tulare counties has helped frame the AWTP legislation.
