Monterey County - From Route 1 in Monterey to the Salinas River.
Leaving Monterey, the gently curving two-lane highway
passes through a corridor of oak and pine trees and on into a sunny plateau with
an unobstructed view of lined vistas, the route then rises abruptly to elevations
of over 700 feet.
Departing this portion, a motorist is afforded a distant view of the Salina
Valley and the Gabilan mountain range. The last five miles of the drive offers
a magnificent stand of sycamores - Sycamore Flats - plus another change of scene
created by the bottom lands of El Toro Creek.
