In the Road Again:
Recycled Tires as Embankment Fill
Californians annually produce 33 million waste tires. Instead of clogging landfills, 70 percent of these are recycled and used in engineering, environmental and consumer projects.
The California Department of Transportation (District 4) is testing shredded tires as an alternative to soil in freeway construction projects. Straddling the Alameda and Santa Clara county line, the Dixon Landing Road interchange improvement project along Interstate 880 includes shredded tires in the embankment fill for a new freeway ramp.
This video outlines the use of recycled tires in this new ramp. You will learn how waste tires are prepared, why they’re a viable alternative and the specifications necessary for civil engineering applications like this.
