PROJECT TITLE: Interstate 680 Sunol Grade Southbound HOV Lane
PROJECT SPONSOR: Caltrans and Alameda County CMA
STATUTORY/REGULATORY MANDATE (if applicable): N/A
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Construct southbound HOV lane from Rte 84 to Rte 237 (14 miles), ramp metering facilities from southbound Stoneridge Drive to Jacklin Road, and southbound auxiliary lanes from Washington Blvd. to Auto Mall Parkway and from Mission Blvd. (SR 262) to Jacklin Road.
PURPOSE AND NEED:
Reduce traffic congestion on southbound I-680 during the morning peak hour from Stoneridge Drive Interchange in Pleasanton to Route 237 in Milpitas and implement Mtc’s HOV Masterplan.
PROJECT HISTORY/BACKGROUND:
Over the past several years there has been a dramatic increase in traffic congestion over the
Sunol Grade now spanning four (4) or more hours each morning. This segment is one of the
worst bottlenecks in the Bay Area. The Alameda, Santa Clara, and Contra Costa CMA’s as
well as politicians and business groups have worked closely together to provide solutions
and funding for the corridor. The project was environmental cleared in September 2000, and
is being constructed as follows:
First Contract -- HOV lane between Route 84 and Route 237. This will not include any structure widening and is intended to expedite the opening of the HOV lane. Design Sequencing contract.
Second Contract -- Construct sound walls. Design and construction by the Alameda CMA.
Third Contract -- Reconstruct structures to meet current standards, install ramp metering facilities and auxiliary lanes.
Related Project -- Auxiliary lane between Auto Mall Parkway and Mission Boulevard (Route 262). This project was 100% locally funded by the Alameda County CMA. Construction administered by the Alameda County Transportation Authority.
CURRENT STATUS:
First Contract is currently under construction and Related Project has been completed. Second Contract to construct sound walls is under design and is approximately 35% complete. Third contract is under design and is 25% complete.
