What is Caltrans?
Caltrans—the State of California Department of Transportation—is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the California State Highway System, as well as that portion of the Interstate Highway System within the state's boundaries. Alone and in partnership with Amtrak, Caltrans is also involved in the support of intercity passenger rail service in California, and is a leader in promoting the use of alternative modes of transportation. The mission of Caltrans is to improve mobilility across California.
Caltrans is divided into twelve (12) districts. The nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area constitute District 4, which is headquartered in Oakland. District 4 also has maintenance stations, construction offices, and other facilities throughout the Bay Area. There are 5000 employees in District 4 including engineers, maintenance workers, toll-collectors, right of way agents, landscape architects, planners, information technology specialists, surveyors, accountants, and administrators. Approximately one-third of the employees in District 4 are engineers, including the District Director and eight of eleven Deputy District Directors.
Caltrans engineers design, and oversee the construction and renovation of California's highways, bridges, and other facilities that are a part of the State's growing transportation system. They also manage the operations of highways, bridges, and other facilities and ensure that the transportation system will continue to meet the needs of California into the future.
Who should apply?
Motivated high school students who are planning their educational future, and students interested in learning about engineering are encouraged to apply for the Caltrans SEI.
What is the Cost per student?
The only cost to students is the desire to learn and challenge yourself. Students will be provided with room and board during the two-week Engineering Institute.
Room and Board
During the two-week period, participants will be housed at San Francisco State University's residential apartments. Separate living quarters will be provided for male students and for female students. Adult supervision will be provided at all times.
Transportation to SFSU at the beginning of the program and from SFSU at the end of the program will be the responsibility of the participant.
All meals will be provided.
