WillowPass Road/I-680 Connector
After assessing the damage caused to the overpass that connects westbound Willow Pass Road to southbound I-680, Caltrans officials announced today that the ramp may be closed until November.
A flatbed truck carrying a drill rig attempted to drive on Willow Pass Road below the overpass on September 5. However, the drill rig was too tall for the overpass and slammed into the structure, causing significant damage.
Stressing that their estimates are preliminary, Caltrans engineers at the scene today indicated that much of the on-ramp overpass may need to be rebuilt. If that is the case, structural engineers will begin working on an emergency construction contract.
Motorists who usually reach southbound I-680 by way of westbound Willow Pass Road are advised to take Contra Costa Boulevard to northbound Concord Avenue. Eastbound traffic will not be affected.
