Highway 1 Project in Marin County Completed Today
Caltrans crews have finished building a retaining wall along a section of Highway 1 near Muir Beach. A portion of Highway 1 that was closed for the construction project is now open. Changeable message signs have been placed along the highway to notify drivers.
The project got underway in Mid-October. A portion of Highway 1, between Muir Beach and Panoramic Highway, had to be closed for the duration of the project (see attached map). Drivers were able to detour around Panoramic Highway with little difficulty.
Over the past several years, heavy winter rains have weakened the hillside along the roadway. Caltrans crews decided to build the retaining wall as a way of minimizing the risk of landslides.
