Caltrans, Railroad, Cities Join Forces To Wipe Out Graffiti

Mayor Gonzales, Caltrans Officials to Hold News Conference on Monday

Caltrans, Union Pacific Railroad, and the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara are teaming up to remove unsightly graffiti from several railroad crossings in San Jose.

For some time, graffiti has been an eyesore on several railroad crossings along Highway 101. Recently, Caltrans and Union Pacific came to an agreement: The railroad will hire crews to remove the graffiti, with the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara assuming the cost. Caltrans will provide traffic control along Highway 101 at no cost. Crews will also install heavy-duty fencing on the crossings to discourage any future "tagging." Caltrans maintenance crews will use this time to perform other tasks, including litter removal.

The work sites will be the Julian McKee Overcrossing in San Jose, the 13th Street Underpass in San Jose, and the Agnew Underpass in Santa Clara.

The week-long graffiti removal project is scheduled to begin this Saturday night, weather permitting. Crews will be working on the Julian McKee Overcrossing from 10 PM to 5 AM the following morning. Two lanes at a time along Highway 101 will be closed while the work is taking place. When the work at this site is complete, the crews will move on to the other two sites. The entire project should be finished by 5AM Friday morning.

San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales and Caltrans officials will hold a news conference on Monday, October 30, 2000, to discuss the program in detail. The news conference will be held at 2:30 at the Caltrans Maintenance Yard, 500 Queens Lane, San Jose.
