Caltrans to Restripe Lower Deck Lanes of Bay Bridge
With Solid White Lines
In an effort to reduce work zone traffic accidents, Caltrans crews will restripe the lower deck lanes of the west span of the Bay Bridge – eastbound direction –with solid white lines. The restriping is intended to discourage lane changing in the area of the retrofit construction activities.
The restriping will begin after 1:00 a.m. Sunday, May 13, and be completed by 6:00 a.m. The work requires the closure of up to four of the five lanes crossing the bridge.
The California Highway Patrol has recently stepped-up its enforcement on the bridge, watching for motorists who speed and make unsafe lane changes. Traffic fines are doubled through this construction area.
Caltrans is working on a $170 million project to retrofit the west span of the Bay Bridge. Each day as many as two hundred people work on the retrofit of the west span, a project that is expected to be completed in about three years.
