Caltrans Completes Feasibility Study of
For West Span of Bay Bridge
A feasibility study that examines the possibility of attaching bicycle lanes to the west span of the Bay Bridge has been completed by Caltrans. The study indicates that building such lanes is feasible and considers two alternatives as the best possibilities.
If the lanes were built on the west span, they would connect on Yerba Buena Island with the bicycle lane that is planned for the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge, a project that should begin construction later this year.
Both alternatives would consist of a lane on each side of the upper deck of the bridge. Bicyclists, pedestrians and Caltrans maintenance personnel driving in lightweight electric vehicles could use the lanes.
The first alternative would blend with the existing architecture of the bridge. However, this alternative is much heavier than the other option, and therefore requires replacing the asphalt on the lower deck of the bridge with a lightweight steel deck. This alternative costs $380 million.
The second alternative is modern in appearance, contrasting with the existing bridge. The bicycle lanes are designed with lightweight material, thus requiring no requiring no asphalt removal on the lower deck. This option costs $160 million.
Caltrans will present the findings of the study at a public meeting on Wednesday, May 2, beginning at 6 p.m. at the PUC building, 505 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco.
