RETROFIT OF YERBA BUENA ISLAND TUNNEL BEGINS
Caltrans has awarded a construction contract to Johnson Western Gunite of San Leandro for the retrofit the Yerba Buena Island tunnel which connects the eastern and western spans of the Bay Bridge. Crews are expected to begin working on this $ 900,000 construction project in the next few weeks. No lane closures for this project are expected. Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2000.
Crews will anchor the parapet walls – the walls that rise above the tunnel’s portals - into the solid rock of Yerba Buena Island. No work will occur inside the tunnel itself. This retrofit is one of several larger projects to strengthen the Bay Bridge and its approaches.
Built in 1936, the Yerba Buena Island tunnel remains listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest single-bore tunnel in the world.
