High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lane
Gap Closure Project in Marin County
Overview: The population of the North Bay continues to grow, putting more pressure
on U.S. Highway 101, the transportation lifeline of Marin and Sonoma
Counties. To make matters worse, the North Bay has no equivalent of
BART or Caltrain. The only alternatives to single-occupancy vehicle
commuting are express buses, employee van pools, and car pools, all of
which use the High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane.
But there is a problem – the HOV lane is not continuous. It starts and then
stops at various locations in Marin County. The Gap Closure Project will
provide an uninterrupted HOV lane through the most densely populated
section of Marin County. Once finished, commuters will finally have a
viable option to single-occupancy commuting. The Gap Closure project is divided into four segments. Segments One and Two, from the Greenbrae Pedestrian Overcrossing to just before the 101/580 interchange, have been completed. The other two segments are in construction. They are:
Segment Three, Central San Rafael. From the Coleman Pedestrian Overcrossing to the 101/580 interchange. For more on that segment, click here.
Segment Four, Puerto Suello Hill. From the Coleman Pedestrian Overcrossing to North San Pedro. For more on that segment, click here.
