5th Ave Seismic Retrofit Project

Project Overview
Construction is moving forward to replace the existing 5th Avenue overhead structure on I-880 with a new structure that will provide improved seismic and traffic safety. You will soon begin to see increased activity on the project site.

Built more than 60 years ago, the existing 5th Avenue overhead structure would be seriously damaged during a major earthquake. Damage to the structure would threaten public safety, as well as disrupt a major Bay Area transportation route.

The structure currently has a seismically inadequate foundation that is not up to today’s safety standards. Also, the roadway’s lack of shoulder space does not provide an adequate level of safety for motorists who may need to pull over in an emergency.

Upcoming Road Closures

As the project progresses, some road closures are necessary. Caltrans is working to inform all those affected by these closures and will work to minimize disruptions to the extent possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this important construction project. Upcoming road closures include:

Please Be Careful - Traffic delays may occur due to movement of heavy equipment and materials to a temporary storage area at 9th Street and Pine Street in West Oakland, as crews prep for construction in the 5th Avenue area.

Please note that road closures are subject to change. Check www.I880Corridor.org for the most up-to-date information.
