Caltrans District 4 Holiday Toy Drive

Caltrans District 4 Delivers Holiday Cheer
Toys Delight Young Patients

Caltrans District 4 employees collected more than 500 toys this holiday season, delivering good cheer and holiday wishes for wellness to children in two Bay Area hospitals. Young patients reacted with bright smiles and joyful laughs at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland.

District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi visited UCSF Children's Hospital Outpatient Dialysis & Infusion Clinics in December on behalf of District 4 employees. With the help of hospital staff and Caltrans employees, specially prepared gift bags were given to each patient. District 4 employees had assembled the gift bags with special age-appropriate and culturally diverse dolls, toys, and books, along with a teddy bear.

Bijan Sartipi This year's efforts resulted in generous donations, including educational games and materials from Caltrans workers throughout District 4's nine Bay Area counties. Engineers, maintenance workers, transportation planners and district office staffers in downtown Oakland donated a wide range of items. Each contribution sent a message of support for patients and their families during the holidays.

Two District 4 maintenance workers wearing hard hats and bright safety vests visited Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland on December 20, 2007. They pulled a cart loaded with District 4's festive donation barrel through the lobby and down to the basement, where volunteers prepared the gifts for hospital patients.

"This holiday effort demonstrates the incredible generosity of Oakland's District 4 staff," said Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi. "Our team is very community-minded and gives back in incredible ways. The toy drive for UCSF Children's Hospital and Oakland Children's Hospital is just one example of their great work in the Bay Area."

According to Kevin Urda, UCSF Children's Hospital Community Liaison, "Our community partners brought great holiday cheer, lifted spirits, and lent support. Our goal to make visits at the hospital a little better for our patients, families, and friends, was easier, thanks to Caltrans."
