1. How long are the tunnels?

The northbound tunnel is 4,149 feet long. The southbound is 4,008 feet long.


2. When will they open?

They are scheduled to open to traffic sometime in late 2012.


3. How much will they cost?

$439 million for the tunnels. Another $42 million for the new bridges.


4. Why are they necessary?

This section of Highway 1 along the coast was prone to regular slides and
slipouts, which necessitated frequent long-term road closures. The closures
adversely affected both local businesses and the nearby residents.

5. What will become of the old road?

It will be turned over to San Mateo County. They will transform it into a trail
for bicyclists and pedestrians.
