On April 3, 2008, District 4 hosted the first annual Calmentor Celebration Event to recognize the achievements of the Statewide Calmentor Efforts. The event was held at the Oakland Marriotts City Center with over 200 attendees. The attendees included representation from small business, Disabled Veteran Business Enterprises, Disadvantaged Business Enterprises, established firms, local agencies, Association of General Contractors, and other State Departments. Beyond the good food and company, attendees engaged in creating business relationships, learning the tricks of the trade at the four workshops that were offered, and finding out about contracting opportunities both with Caltrans and other agencies. Attendees also had the opportunity to voice concerns directly to California’s top officials: Business, Transportation and Housing Secretary Dale Bonner and Office of Small Business Advocate Director Marty Keller. Caltrans top officials including Director Will Kempton, Deputy Director for Civil Rights Olivia Fonseca, and Director 4 Director Bijan Sartipi were also available throughout the event to listen and interact with attendees.
