The Project
The 80/Hilltop Drive Bridge Replacement Project will demolish the eastbound (south) Hilltop Drive Bridge, construct a new bridge on a new profile, and modify the eastbound on-ramp profile to match the new roadway. The north bridge for westbound Hilltop Drive traffic will remain in place.

The bridge on the left will be removed. During construction of the new bridge, the bridge on the right will be restriped for two-way traffic.

The Need
Interstate 80 serves as a major commuter, commercial and recreational route. A 2003 inspection of the eastbound Hilltop Drive overcrossing noted that settlement, lateral movement and cracking of the deck and structure had occurred since the bridge was constructed in 1957. The new bridge will meet current vertical clearance and seismic standards and improve the safety of this vital interstate connection.

Benefits
Replacing the bridge will eliminate the structural concerns and address the non-standard clearance, allowing large loads to be transported through the I-80 corridor. The new bridge will also have a span that will accommodate future additional lanes on I-80.

Partnership
The new structure includes a bike lane and a sidewalk that is compatible with the 1994 City of Richmond General Plan. An AC Transit bus shelter will be replaced with a brand name model that is compatible with the bus company's standards.

Project Status
Capital funding for this project was voted by CTC at its April 2008 meeting. The project was awarded on July 3, 2008.

Project Schedule
Start Construction: January 2009
