This year Caltrans will begin two projects for slope protection on State Route 128/Oat Valley Road in Sonoma County. Both projects are located west of Cloverdale and just east of the Mendocino County line.

Both projects will include one-way traffic control with flaggers and traffic signals. Motorists should expect delays when traveling through the construction site. Due to construction near a hair-pin curve, a long term detour for big rigs will be in effect for the duration of Project 1.

Project 1 is located two miles west of the three-way intersection of North Cloverdale Boulevard/ North Redwood Highway/Oat Valley Road, approximately 1.8 miles east of the Mendocino County line. Construction will begin in late March 2015 and continue through October 2015.

The project will construct
  • One 246-ft. long soldier pile wall with timber lagging adjacent to the eastbound lane
  • Four-ft. shoulders and standard 12-ft. lane in the eastbound and westbound directions.
  • Big Rig Restriction: due to staging of construction equipment and constraints in space at a hair-pin curve, big rigs will not be able to drive through the construction zone. Big rig truckers are advised NOT to travel on Hwy 128 between the North Cloverdale Boulevard/SR 128 intersection and the intersection of State Routes 128 and 253, unless the king-pin to rear-axle (KPRA) length is no more than 30 feet.
  • Detour: Big Rigs will be detoured to State Route 253. See detour map for more information.
Project 2 is located 1.5 miles west of the three-way intersection of North Cloverdale Boulevard/ North Redwood Highway/Oat Valley Road, approximately 2.4 miles east of the Mendocino County line. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2015 and continue through October 2015.

The project will construct
  • One retaining wall approximately 91 ft.-long adjacent to the westbound lane.
  • Widen SR 128 to include a 12-ft. wide lane and 4-ft. shoulder in the westbound direction only.
  • Install anchored wire mesh drapery system and horizontal drains on the slope above the eastbound lane.
If work is delayed due to weather conditions, it will be rescheduled for a later time. Please drive cautiously through the construction zone, follow the direction of flaggers, leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you, and Slow for the Cone Zone.
