101 Traffic Operating Systems and Ramp Metering Project

Map

SCL 101 PM 0.0/26.7, From San Benito County Line to Route 85. Ramp Metering and Traffic Operating Systems -EA-04-15330

Beginning June 2014, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will install ramp metering elements, various traffic operations systems and widen 17 ramps in Santa Clara County on U.S. 101 from San Benito County line to State Route 85 / 101 interchange.

The work will be conducted in both the northbound and southbound directions in the cities of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill and San Jose. In addition to ramp metering and widening, the project will add 22 new closed circuit television cameras (CCTV), 49 maintenance vehicle pullouts, 12 CHP pullouts and add four traffic monitoring stations.

The implementation of ramp metering construction of wider ramps will enhance traffic flow on the freeway, decrease travel time and improve mobility through the corridor during peak hours. The electronic traffic systems will allow real time monitoring of highway conditions to provide better response times for law enforcement, fire and medical emergency. Caltrans will also be able to respond in a timelier manner to making traffic systems adjustments to optimize traffic flow.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

  • Construction will be conducted both during the day and evening weekdays and some weekends. Caltrans will work closely with the cities to avoid impacting special city events.
  • Intermittent ramp closures will occur primarily during the evening; however, some daytime ramp closures are possible. Caltrans will strive to avoid closing ramps during the daytime and will never close two consecutive ramps unless there is a highway emergency. Electronic highway message signs will be posted to assist motorists traveling through the area
  • Construction noise will be unavoidable; however, it will be kept within approved construction noise levels.
