Inquiry: What is the limit for Item #67- Paint Timber Lagging? Does this item pertain to all sufaces of the timber lagging, or only the final exposed surfaces?

8/4/08
Response: Your inquiry has been received and is being reviewed. Thank you for your patience.

Refer to Plan Sheet 49 of 60, "Tieback Wall at PM 41.5," Note 7: "First 12 pieces of lagging along length of wall to be painted with color as specified."
To clarify: From the top of wall, the first 12 pieces are counted from the top piece of lagging down, and from the beginning to the end of the wall, along the entire length of the wall.

Inquiry: 1. On Sheet No. 49, on the “Pile Section at Tieback” detail, and on “Detail A” a galvanized spike is shown going through a flange of the W 18x89 soldier beam into the wood lagging. Do you really want us to burn or drill a hole through the zinc coated beam every 12” vertically? There will be no way to zinc coat inside the burnt hole as described in section 10-1.52. If you do want a hole through the beam flange, there is no indication of the size of hole allowed. There are other ways of supporting the lagging without going through the beam flange with a nail. We do not recommend putting a hole through the beam flange in order to put a nail through the beam to the lagging.
2. We do not find the weld requirements between the tieback Bearing plate assemble (Bearing plate, Wedge plate, Closure plate) and the front flange of the steel soldier beam on the details on Sheet No’s 49 and 50. What weld is required to secure the Bearing plate assemble to the steel beam?
3. On sheet No. 49 “Detail A”, “Tieback Cover Block Section F-F” and “Tieback Cover Block Elevation” shows that the Anchor Studs appear to be installed on the front flange of the soldier beam in line with the soldier beam web, which is in conflict with the location of the Wedge plate of the tieback Bearing plate assemble which is also shown to be welded to the front flange of the soldier beam in line with the soldier beam web as shown on the “Pile Section at Tieback” detail. The Bearing plate will extend beyond the Wedge plate some distance, so the Anchor studs will need to be placed at least four (4) inches from the centerline of the soldier beam web. The last note in the list of “Notes:” indicated by “*” seems to address this issue, but the adjustment may be more than Cal Trans anticipates. Please clarify.
4. Please clarify that wood lagging is not intended to be installed in the seven (7) to eight (8) inch space between each beam of each fabricated soldier beam set. Details “Pile Section at Tieback”, “Detail A”, “Tieback Cover Block Elevation” on Sheet No. 49, and “Section X-X” on Sheet No. 51 show no wood lagging between the soldier beam sets. However, the “Tieback Cover Block Section F-F” on Sheet No. 49 which is cut through the center of the soldier beam show lagging in this space. In our experience lagging is never installed in this space, and we assume that the lagging shown on section F-F was meant to illustrate the lagging between soldier beams, not between the individual soldier beam sets. Would you please clarify?

1) The spike is shown between the HP pile flange and 1/2" Premolded Expansion Joint Filler. The spike is not installed through a hole in the pile flange.

2) A fillet weld is shown on Sheet 50 of 60 on both sides of the closure plate between the HP pile flanges and the bearing plate.

3) Any conflict with the anchor studs depends upon the fabricator's choice of anchor plate size.

4) The plans do not call for the removal of Lean Concrete Backfill between the "individual soldier beam sets".

Inquiry: I recently was submitted a request for a bid for the timber lagging for EA 470211 near Redcrest, CA. from a local contractor. I have looked over the plans as well as the spec sheets and would like clarification as to what the exact specs are for these members. Lengths, pressure treating requirements, ect. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Inquiry: We have received 2 addenda for this proejct. The addendum information page on the Office Engineer's page shows 3 addenda. Addendum 3 on the website appears to be addendum 2 that was sent out. Addendum 2 on the website has no information associated with it. How should we ackowledge the addenda in the bid proposal, 2 addenda or 3 addenda?
