The Freeway Operations Branch is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all the urban freeways in the District. We are also the "route managers", meaning that we monitor all of the land developments, encroachment permits, and local agency and citizen concerns that occur on or along these routes. We regularly drive these routes to investigate areas of high accident concentrations, congestion, the impacts of developments and permits, etc. From these investigations, we make recommendations for changes or improvements to the routes. In addition, Freeway Operations provides safety and operational advice and review to Project Development, Construction, and Maintenance as they design, construct, and maintain the projects delivered by the District.

Traffic Safety Investigations - Such investigations into traffic incidents result in several reviews and reports like collision data review, collision diagram, skid test inspection reports and so on. These reviews and diagrams help identify areas of congestions and areas requiring improvements. This is one way by which our future safety projects and programs are identified. During the design phase of these projects, we provide active support in the evaluation of alternatives and make recommendations. We also provide Safety Indices, description and rough estimates for feasiblility studies.

Our support continues after the completion of safety projects as well.
