Southbound I-805 HOV Lane Opens Monday

SAN DIEGO –Motorists will have new transportation choices in the Golden Triangle with the opening of one southbound High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane on Interstate 805 (I-805) beginning Monday.

Carpoolers, vanpools, buses, motorcycles and solo drivers in permitted clean air vehicles will be able to access the new HOV lane just south of La Jolla Village Drive to just north of State Route 52 (SR-52). The lane will be striped with white dashed lines allowing continuous access to traffic.

Lane closures on southbound I-805 along the new HOV Lanes will take place Sunday night from 8 until 5 in the morning for striping.

The opening comes about a year ahead of schedule for the I-805 North Express Lanes Project.

“Our goal at Caltrans is to deliver quality projects on time and safely,” said Caltrans Resident Engineer Steve McMillan.  “The early opening of this southbound HOV lane is a stellar example of innovation made possible with a Design Build project in which we can begin construction while plans are still being developed.”

Construction for Stage 1 of the I-805 North Express Lanes Project is expected to be completed next summer and will include the opening of a southbound HOV lane between Carroll Canyon Road and La Jolla Village Drive.  Other work underway is completing the south-facing Direct Access Ramp (DAR) at Carroll Canyon Road, bridge widening and a northbound HOV lane.

The DAR will allow direct access to the HOV lanes on I-805 to and from the recently constructed Carroll Canyon Road Extension, eliminating the need to merge across the general purpose lanes.

The construction cost for Stage 1 is about $86 million and is funded with state, federal and local sources including Proposition 1B State and Local Partnership Program and TransNet Extensionfunds.
