WHO: Caltrans District 11 Director Laurie Berman, Caltrans Division Chief of Maintenance Tony Tavares, Caltrans Deputy District Director of Construction and Land Surveys Amer Bata, Caltrans District Division Chief of Maintenance Everett Townsend, and California Highway Patrol Chief Jim Abele.
WHAT: Caltrans and CHP will pay tribute to the men and women highway workers who have died in the line of duty during the annual Caltrans Highway Workers Memorial Day ceremony.

A memorial display of 183 orange safety cones will represent each of the Caltrans workers killed in the line of duty statewide since 1921. Of the 183 cones, 18 will signify those Caltrans employees who lost their lives while working along highways in San Diego and Imperial counties. A banner featuring children of Caltrans highway workers asking drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert” will be unveiled at the close of the ceremony.
Highway workers who have experienced “close call” incidents and a Spanish-speaking spokesperson will be available for interviews. Caltrans District 11 Employees’ Committee will provide refreshments.
