State Route 163 Closures Tonight and Thursday

SAN DIEGO – Caltrans crews will close southbound State Route 163 (SR-163) from Interstate 8 (I-8) to Interstate I-5 (I-5) tonight from 10-5 in the morning to remove temporary concrete barriers from the roadway shoulders.

The closure includes the westbound and eastbound I-8 connector ramps to southbound SR-163 as well as the Robinson Avenue on-ramp, Washington Street on- and off-ramps, and the University Avenue off-ramp.  The northbound and southbound I-5 connector ramps to southbound SR-163 will also be closed.

Signs will be placed directing motorists traveling southbound SR-163 to take the westbound I-8 connector onto the southbound I-5 on-ramp to access northbound SR-163.

Northbound SR-163 will be closed Thursday from10 p.m.-5 a.m. at A Street and 11th Avenue to just north of the Laurel Street overcrossing. The connector from northbound and southbound I-5 to northbound SR-163 will be closed during the same time period as well as the Park Boulevard on-ramp to northbound SR-163.

Motorists may travel north on 11th Avenue to the northbound I-5 on-ramp, to the eastbound I-8 connector, to access SR-163 in both directions.

The closures are part of the SR-163 Cabrillo Bridge (Laurel Street Overcrossing) Retrofit and Rehabilitation Project.  Crews have been working since fall 2013 to upgrade the structural integrity of the bridge making it stronger in case of an earthquake and preserving it for years to come.  The project is nearing completion within the next few weeks in time for the Balboa Park 2015 Centennial celebrations.
